In the remote marshes of North Carolina, Kya grows up largely alone after her family drifts away, learning the tides, birds, and mudflats better than she knows people. Locals whisper about the Marsh Girl, turning her into a myth and keeping her at arm’s length even as she cautiously reaches out to kind shopkeepers and a boy who teaches her to read. Years later, when a popular young man from town is discovered dead near the marsh, Kya’s outsider status makes her an easy suspect and pulls her into a tense courtroom battle. The story blends coming-of-age solitude, fragile romance, and a moody murder mystery, all set against lush, wild landscapes and the harsh judgment of a small Southern community.
