Bernard Bernie Jordan is a World War II veteran living in a quiet English care home with his wife Rene. When official trips to the D-Day anniversary in Normandy pass him by, he decides to make his own way there, slipping out with his medals and stubborn sense of duty. His brief journey brings him among fellow veterans and young strangers, as news of his disappearance spreads back home. The film balances gentle humour with tender, reflective drama, following an elderly couple facing frailty, old secrets and the long shadow of war while holding onto love, dignity and a bit of mischief.
