Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the story follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, World War I veterans turned bootleggers, who return home with stolen money to open a Black juke joint in a derelict sawmill. They bring in their young cousin Sammie, a gifted blues guitarist longing to escape his preacher father's church, hoping music, liquor, and community will give them a second chance. As night falls and the club fills with dancers, the atmosphere shifts from sweaty celebration to mounting dread, hinting at a brutal, otherworldly threat tied to local hoodoo, buried trauma, and the violent racism surrounding them.
