Set in a 19th century winter wilderness, the story follows Jean Kayak, a hard-drinking applejack maker whose life explodes, leaving him hungry, broke, and surrounded by mischievous beavers. To survive and impress a local merchant’s furrier daughter, he stumbles into the brutal, ridiculous world of fur trapping, trading pelts for increasingly absurd tools and weapons. Shot in black and white and almost entirely without dialogue, the film plays like a live-action cartoon, packed with slapstick stunts, mascot-style animal costumes, and video game style gags as Jean wages a frostbitten war against nature.
