Set almost entirely in Sardi's restaurant on March 31, 1943, the film follows legendary Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart over one long night as he faces his dwindling career, hard drinking, and lingering heartbreak. While Richard Rodgers toasts the opening of Oklahoma! down the street, Hart holds court at the bar, sparring with friends and strangers and waiting for young Yale student Elizabeth, the woman who has revived his sense of possibility. The tone is intimate and talkative, blending sharp, funny conversations with a melancholy look at aging, creativity, and the cost of chasing love and success.
