A group of enthusiastic German schoolboys, led by 17-year-old Paul Baumer, sign up to fight in World War I, dreaming of glory and adventure. Their training is harsh but still filled with nervous excitement, until they reach the Western Front and face mud, shells, hunger, and constant fear. Through life in the trenches, Paul bonds with older, battle-scarred soldiers and sees his patriotic school lessons clash with the reality around him. The film stays close to Paul's point of view, with a grim, immersive tone that focuses on friendship, exhaustion, and the human cost of war rather than heroics.
